A lunar eclipse happens when Earth moves directly between the Sun and the Moon, casting its shadow across the lunar surface. It only ever occurs at a full moon, and depending on how precisely the three line up, it can gently dim the Moon or turn it a haunting shade of deep red, the sight so many people call a “blood moon.”
It’s one of the few genuinely spectacular astronomical events you can watch with nothing but your own eyes, no telescope and no special glasses required. So let’s break down exactly how a lunar eclipse works, why the Moon sometimes glows red, and why we don’t get to see one every single month.
How a Lunar Eclipse Happens
The setup is beautifully simple. During a full moon, the Moon sits on the opposite side of Earth from the Sun. Most months it passes a little above or below Earth’s shadow and nothing happens. But every so often the Sun, Earth, and Moon line up almost perfectly, and Earth’s shadow falls squarely onto the Moon. That’s a lunar eclipse.
Earth actually casts two shadows into space. The dark inner shadow, where the Sun is completely blocked, is called the umbra. The fainter outer shadow, where Earth blocks only part of the Sun, is the penumbra. Which of these the Moon passes through, and how deeply, determines exactly what kind of eclipse you’ll see.
The Three Types of Lunar Eclipse
Not all lunar eclipses are created equal. There are three kinds, and they range from unforgettable to almost invisible.

A total lunar eclipse is the showstopper. A partial eclipse looks like something has taken a curved bite out of the lunar disk. And a penumbral eclipse is so gentle that most people wouldn’t notice it was happening at all.
Why the Moon Turns Red
The blood-red color of a total lunar eclipse is the part that stops people in their tracks, and the explanation is genuinely poetic.
When the Moon is fully inside Earth’s umbra, you’d think it would simply go dark. Instead, sunlight bends as it passes through the ring of Earth’s atmosphere and spills into the shadow. Along the way, the atmosphere scatters away the bluer light, the same effect that makes our sky blue, while the redder light bends through and lands on the Moon. As NASA puts it, it’s as if all the world’s sunrises and sunsets are being projected onto the lunar surface at once. The more dust and cloud in Earth’s air at the time, the deeper the red. Why We Don’t Get One Every Month
If a lunar eclipse needs a full moon, and we get a full moon every month, why isn’t there an eclipse every month?
The answer is a slight tilt. The Moon’s orbit around Earth is tipped about 5 degrees relative to Earth’s orbit around the Sun. Because of that tilt, at most full moons the Moon rides a little high or a little low, and Earth’s shadow sails harmlessly past it. Only when a full moon happens to fall right where the two orbits cross do the Sun, Earth, and Moon line up closely enough for the shadow to strike. That’s why eclipses come in their own rhythm rather than once a month, though across a whole year our planet still serves up somewhere between four and seven eclipses of all kinds.
Lunar vs Solar Eclipse: What’s the Difference?
It’s easy to mix the two up, so here’s the clean distinction. A lunar eclipse is Earth’s shadow falling on the Moon, and it happens at full moon. There are two big practical differences. First, a lunar eclipse is completely safe to look at with the naked eye, whereas staring at a solar eclipse can permanently damage your vision. Second, a lunar eclipse is visible from the entire night side of Earth at once, so billions of people can watch the same event, while a solar eclipse is only visible along a narrow track a few hundred kilometers wide. That’s why, even though the two happen about equally often, you’re far more likely to catch a lunar eclipse in your lifetime.
When Is the Next Lunar Eclipse?
Lunar eclipses arrive a few times a year. The most recent was a deep partial eclipse on the night of August 27–28, 2026, when nearly the entire Moon slipped into Earth’s umbra.
