Why Is the Moon Orange Tonight: The Simple Science Behind a Glowing Red Moon

The Short Answer

The Moon usually looks orange or red because it’s sitting low on the horizon, and its light has to travel through a thick slice of Earth’s atmosphere to reach your eyes. That air scatters away the blue light and lets the warmer orange and red tones pass through, exactly the same reason sunsets glow red. So a low Moon looks orange for the very same reason a setting Sun does.

You’ve probably had that moment. You step outside, glance up, and there it is, a huge burnt-orange Moon hanging just above the rooftops, looking nothing like the pale silvery disk you’re used to. It can be a little startling the first time. The good news is there’s usually nothing strange or ominous going on. It’s just physics, and once you understand it, you’ll spot the effect all the time.

It’s All About the Air in the Way

Here’s the heart of it. Sunlight and moonlight are made of all the colours of the rainbow mixed together. When that light travels through Earth’s atmosphere, the tiny molecules in the air are very good at knocking the short, bluish wavelengths off course and scattering them in every direction. The longer red and orange wavelengths sail through much more easily.

When the Moon is high overhead, its light only has to punch through a fairly thin layer of atmosphere to reach you, so it stays looking pale and white. But when the Moon is low near the horizon, that light comes in at a shallow angle and has to plough through a far thicker stretch of air, sometimes dozens of times more. Nearly all the blue gets scattered out along the way, leaving mostly the warm colours behind. The result is that lovely orange or reddish glow. It’s the identical process that paints the sky at sunrise and sunset.

Why the Colour Fades as the Moon Climbs

This is the part that gives the whole thing away. Keep watching that orange Moon for an hour or so and you’ll notice it gradually turning paler, shifting from deep orange to yellow to its familiar bright white.

Nothing about the Moon itself is changing. What’s changing is the angle. As the Moon climbs higher into the sky, its light passes through less and less atmosphere, so less blue gets scattered away and the colour drains back toward white. That slow fade from orange to silver is the clearest proof that the atmosphere, not the Moon, is doing all the colouring.

When the Orange Gets Really Intense

Sometimes the Moon looks especially vivid, a deep pumpkin or even blood-red shade, and stays that way even as it rises. When that happens, there’s usually something extra floating in the air.

Smoke from distant wildfires, desert dust, volcanic ash, haze, and everyday air pollution all add more particles for the light to bounce off. Those particles are particularly good at filtering out everything except the reddest light, so during a smoky summer or a dusty spell the Moon can turn a startlingly deep red. Orange Moon or Blood Moon? They’re Not the Same

Here’s a distinction worth clearing up, because people mix these two up constantly. An everyday orange Moon and a true “blood Moon” are caused by completely different things.

A blood Moon, on the other hand, happens during a total lunar eclipse, when the Moon passes directly into Earth’s shadow. One More Thing You Might Notice

While we’re here, there’s a bonus illusion that often tags along with an orange Moon. When the Moon is low on the horizon it can also look enormous, far bigger than when it’s overhead. That’s the famous “Moon illusion,” and it’s a genuine quirk of human perception rather than anything physical. The Moon isn’t actually any larger near the horizon, our brains just judge its size differently when it’s next to trees and buildings. So a low Moon often looks both bigger and oranger at the same time, even though only one of those is really happening in the sky.
