The Scorpius Constellation: How to Find the Scorpion and Its Fiery Red Heart

Here’s a rare treat in astronomy. Most constellations look nothing like the thing they’re named after, and you have to squint and pretend to see a bear or a lion or a set of scales. Scorpius is the glorious exception. Look up on a summer night and there it is, a long curving tail, a hooked stinger, and a burning red star right where the creature’s heart should be. It genuinely looks like a scorpion crawling across the sky. It’s one of the oldest and most beloved constellations there is, and it comes with a great story.

A Constellation That Actually Looks Like Its Name

Scorpius is shaped like a giant letter J, or a fishhook, hanging low in the southern sky. The curved bottom of the J forms the scorpion’s tail, sweeping around to a pair of stars called Shaula and Lesath that sit close together and mark the stinger. Above that, a row of bright stars forms the head and claws.

Because its shape is so obvious and its stars are so bright, Scorpius is one of the easiest constellations to recognize once you know where to look. Antares: The Rival of Mars

The star that makes Scorpius unforgettable is Antares, glowing a deep ruby red right at the scorpion’s heart. It’s one of the brightest stars in the entire night sky, and its color is impossible to miss.

Antares is a red supergiant, a colossal aging star nearing the end of its life, having burned through most of its fuel. The name Antares is a lovely piece of history. It means “rival of Ares,” Ares being the Greek name for the god of war, whose Roman name gives us the planet Mars. Ancient skywatchers kept mixing up the star’s fiery red glow with the red planet Mars whenever it wandered nearby, so they named the star the rival of Mars. The Ancient Grudge With Orion

Here’s the part I love most. Scorpius and the winter constellation Orion are locked in an eternal chase, and it’s written right into the sky.

In Greek mythology, the great hunter Orion boasted that he could kill every animal on Earth. This arrogance angered the gods, and the earth goddess Gaia sent a giant scorpion to sting him dead. Afterward both were placed among the stars, but deliberately on opposite sides of the sky, so they would never meet. And this is the beautiful part, it’s actually true. Deep-Sky Treasures in the Scorpion

Because Scorpius sits right against the Milky Way, it’s absolutely packed with things to see through binoculars or a small telescope. Two open star clusters stand out, the Butterfly Cluster (Messier 6) and the Ptolemy Cluster (Messier 7), both loose, sparkling swarms of stars easily enjoyed with binoculars. M7 is especially bright and has been known since ancient times, the astronomer Ptolemy recorded it nearly two thousand years ago, which is how it got its nickname.

There’s also a globular cluster called M4 sitting right next to Antares, a dense ball of hundreds of thousands of ancient stars. Under a dark sky it’s a rewarding target and one of the closest globular clusters to us.

When to Look for Scorpius

Scorpius is a summer constellation for Northern Hemisphere skywatchers, best seen low in the southern sky during July and August evenings. Because it sits so far south, it never climbs very high for northern viewers, so you’ll want a clear, unobstructed view toward the southern horizon. The farther south you travel, the higher and more spectacular it appears, and observers in the Southern Hemisphere get the very best view of all.
