Short answer first, because it’s the question everyone actually wants settled: no. Asteroid 2029 Apophis will not hit Earth. On April 13, 2029, this stony near-Earth asteroid, about 340 meters across, will sweep past our planet at roughly 32,000 kilometers, closer than many of the satellites we rely on every day, and then carry on around the Sun without leaving a scratch.

But the fact that it misses is exactly what makes it worth talking about. For a few tense years after its discovery, Apophis was the scariest rock in the sky. Named After a God of Chaos, and for Good Reason

Apophis was discovered on June 19, 2004, by three astronomers, Roy Tucker, David Tholen, and Fabrizio Bernardi, working at Kitt Peak in Arizona. It did not stay quiet for long.

Within months, the early orbit calculations threw up a genuinely alarming number. There appeared to be about a 2.7 percent chance, roughly 1 in 37, that Apophis would slam into Earth in 2029. That may not sound huge, but for an object this size it was terrifying, and it pushed Apophis to level 4 on the Torino impact scale, the highest rating any asteroid has ever received. The discoverers gave it a fitting name. Apophis, or Apep, was the ancient Egyptian serpent-god of chaos and darkness, the sworn enemy of the Sun. A rock that looked like it might end cities got a villain’s name to match.

Then the story turned. As telescopes tracked Apophis month after month, and especially after detailed radar observations in 2021, its future path was pinned down with real precision. The impact scenarios for 2029, 2036, and beyond fell away one by one. Today both NASA and ESA are clear about it: there is no risk of Apophis striking Earth for at least the next hundred years. Just How Close Is Close?

At its nearest, Apophis will pass about 32,000 kilometers, roughly 20,000 miles, above Earth’s surface. To put that in perspective, the satellites that beam your TV and weather data sit in geostationary orbit at around 36,000 kilometers. Apophis will slip in closer than that. It will be less than a tenth of the distance between Earth and the Moon.

To be clear, that satellite comparison is about altitude, not a collision course through a crowded lane. Apophis will not be weaving between spacecraft. It simply dips below the height where those satellites orbit, which is remarkable enough on its own.

You Might Be Able to See It With Your Own Eyes

This is the part that turns a scientific event into a personal one.

On the night of April 13, 2029, Apophis will not need a telescope. From parts of Europe, Africa, and western Asia, it should be visible to the naked eye as a modest point of light around magnitude 3, about as bright as the fainter stars in a familiar constellation. It will drift across the sky in the region of Cancer, and if you watch closely you’ll catch it moving, covering roughly the width of a full Moon every minute. Earth Is About to Run a Physics Experiment on an Asteroid

The flyby is not just a spectacle. It’s a laboratory.

When Apophis passes this close, Earth’s gravity will tug on it hard enough to leave marks. Scientists expect the encounter to bend the asteroid’s orbit, tweak the way it tumbles, and possibly shift loose rocks and dust around its surface, a kind of gentle planetary massage. Watching how a small body responds to that tugging tells researchers things about its insides that no telescope on the ground could ever reveal. Is Apophis a solid lump or a loose pile of rubble held together by weak gravity? Rather than retire it, NASA redirected it to meet Apophis, arriving just after the flyby to study the asteroid for around 18 months. It may even fire its thrusters at the surface to blow away the top layer and peek at what lies beneath. Apophis is different for a simple reason. It is big, it is close, the date is locked in, and the danger has already been taken off the table.
