What Is the Temperature on Mars? The Highs, the Lows, and Why the Red Planet Is So Cold

The temperature on Mars averages about −60 °C (−80 °F), which makes it far colder than anywhere on Earth. But that single number hides the real story. On a good summer day the equator can warm to a pleasant 20 °C (70 °F) around noon, while the winter poles plunge to a brutal −125 °C (−195 °F) or lower. Mars isn’t just cold. That day-to-night swing is the part that really sets Mars apart. Your own hometown might change by 10 or 15 degrees between afternoon and midnight. On Mars the same patch of ground can lurch by 80 degrees in a single day.

Why Mars Is So Bitterly Cold

Two things gang up to keep Mars frozen.

The first is distance. Mars orbits at about 1.5 times Earth’s distance from the Sun, so sunlight arrives weaker, taking around 13 minutes to get there. Less sunlight means less warmth to begin with.

The second reason is the bigger one: Mars has almost no atmosphere to hold onto what little heat it gets. The Martian air is roughly a hundred times thinner than ours and made mostly of carbon dioxide. On Earth, our atmosphere works like a blanket, trapping warmth and smoothing out the difference between day and night. Mars has no such blanket. Whatever heat the surface soaks up during the day radiates straight back out to space the moment the Sun goes down. Spring at Your Feet, Winter at Your Head

Here’s one of the strangest facts about standing on Mars, and it comes straight from NASA. Because the thin air can’t mix heat around, the temperature can change dramatically over just a couple of meters of height.

If you stood at the Martian equator at noon, the ground at your feet might feel like a mild spring day at about 24 °C (75 °F), while the air around your head would feel like winter, hovering near 0 °C (32 °F). Same spot, same moment, two different seasons from your boots to your hat. No place on Earth behaves like that.

The robots we’ve sent have felt these swings firsthand. NASA’s Curiosity rover has recorded ground temperatures climbing to a few degrees above freezing in the afternoon and then crashing to around −90 °C the same night. It’s a daily rollercoaster that the hardware has to survive over and over again.

Mars Has Seasons, Just Longer and Weirder

Mars does have seasons, and for a familiar reason. Its axis is tilted about 25 degrees, almost the same as Earth’s 23.4-degree tilt, so each hemisphere leans toward and away from the Sun over the year. The difference is length. A year on Mars lasts 687 Earth days, so every season drags on for roughly twice as long as ours.

Mars also has a more lopsided, egg-shaped orbit than Earth, which makes its seasons uneven in length and intensity. Winters get so cold near the poles that carbon dioxide itself freezes out of the air and settles as dry-ice frost, building up the seasonal polar caps. Then in spring it thaws back into gas. Imagine winter being so cold that part of the atmosphere literally falls to the ground as ice. That’s a normal season on Mars.

What This Means for Explorers

All of this is more than trivia. It’s a serious engineering headache. Any future human mission has to cope not just with deep cold but with relentless thermal cycling, warming and freezing day after day, which stresses metal, electronics, and seals. Spacesuits, habitats, and rovers all have to be built for a world where insulation matters far more than it does here.
