The Short Answer
No, Venus has no moons at all. Zero. Along with Mercury, it’s one of only two planets in the entire solar system that goes completely without a natural moon. And that’s genuinely odd, because Venus is almost a twin of Earth in size and makeup, yet Earth has its faithful Moon and Venus has nothing circling it.
It’s the kind of fact that stops you for a second. We’re so used to planets having moons, some of them dozens, that a big rocky world like Venus having none feels like an oversight. But there are real reasons for it, and they tell us something interesting about how moons form and survive in the first place. So let’s look at why Venus ended up alone.
Two Planets, No Moons
First, some company for Venus in its lonely club. The only other moonless planet is Mercury, the closest world to the Sun. Everywhere else in the solar system, moons are the norm. Earth has one, Mars has two little ones, and the giant planets have whole families of them, with Saturn’s tally now running into the hundreds, as we cover in how many moons Saturn actually has.
So Venus and Mercury are the exceptions, and it’s no coincidence they’re the two innermost planets. Being close to the Sun turns out to be a big part of the problem.
The Sun Makes Moons Hard to Keep
Here’s the core of it. Every planet has a zone around it where its own gravity wins out over the Sun’s pull, a kind of gravitational territory where a moon could safely orbit. The farther a planet sits from the Sun, the bigger that territory is. Out by Jupiter and Saturn it’s enormous, which is why those planets can hold so many moons on such wide orbits.
Venus, sitting close to the Sun, has a much smaller zone. The Sun’s gravity dominates so much of the nearby space that there’s very little room for a moon to settle into a stable, lasting orbit. Any moon that tried would be constantly tugged at by the Sun, and over time it would likely be pulled away or dragged into the planet. Simply put, the inner solar system is a tough place to keep a moon.
Venus Never Got a Moon the Usual Ways
There are really only a few ways for a planet to end up with a moon, and Venus missed all of them.
Earth’s Moon was born from a colossal collision. Early in its history, a Mars-sized body slammed into the young Earth and blasted a huge cloud of debris into orbit, which gathered together into the Moon. The other common route is capture. Mars probably didn’t grow its two tiny moons, it likely snatched them from the nearby asteroid belt, where its gravity could grab passing rocks. Venus is both too close to the Sun and too far from that asteroid supply to easily capture anything, and even if it did, the Sun’s meddling would make holding onto it difficult.
Did Venus Ever Have a Moon?
Possibly, once. Some scientists suspect Venus may have had a moon in the distant past that it later lost. Venus spins very slowly and, strangely, backwards compared to most planets, a peculiarity we get into in our guide to Venus, its size, distance, and backward orbit.
One idea is that a giant impact early on could have given Venus a moon and later a second impact, or the slow drag of tides, sent that moon spiralling back into the planet to be destroyed. It’s still speculative, but it would neatly explain why a world so similar to Earth ended up with nothing orbiting it today. Its bizarre backward spin only deepens the mystery.
Meet Zoozve, Venus’s Fake Moon
There is one intriguing loophole. Venus has a companion of sorts, an asteroid with the wonderful name Zoozve, formally designated 2002 VE68.
Zoozve isn’t a true moon. It’s what astronomers call a quasi-moon, an asteroid that orbits the Sun but, thanks to a rhythmic gravitational dance, appears to loop around Venus as the two travel around the Sun almost in step. It isn’t actually bound to Venus the way a real moon would be. Discovered in 2002, it was the first quasi-moon ever found in the solar system, and it only picked up its quirky name in 2024, the result of a charming mix-up where an artist misread “2002 VE” as “Zoozve” on a children’s space poster. It’s been shadowing Venus for around 7,000 years and is expected to drift away in another 500 or so.
So the final answer stands. Venus has no real moons, just a temporary asteroid tagging along at a distance. It’s a strange fate for Earth’s twin, and a neat reminder that having a moon isn’t guaranteed, it depends on where a world sits and how its history played out.
