On a crisp winter evening, step outside and look toward the south. If you spot one star that seems to blaze harder than all the others, flickering and sometimes flashing hints of blue and red, you’ve almost certainly found Sirius. People have been staring at this star for as long as there have been people. The ancient Egyptians built part of their calendar around it. Sailors steered by it. And for thousands of years it has carried a memorable nickname, the Dog Star, because it sits in the constellation of the Greater Dog. There’s a lot going on with Sirius, including a hidden companion that took astronomers well over a century to fully understand. Let’s get into it.
Just How Bright Is Sirius?
Sirius shines at an apparent magnitude of about −1.46. If that number means nothing to you, here’s the translation. On the scale astronomers use for brightness, lower numbers mean brighter objects, and no other true star in our night sky comes close to Sirius. It’s nearly twice as bright as the next brightest star, Canopus.
Only the Moon, the planets Venus, Jupiter and Mars at their best, and of course the Sun outshine it. Everything else in the night sky takes a back seat. Part of that brilliance comes from the star itself being genuinely luminous, roughly 25 times brighter than our Sun. But a big part is simply that Sirius is close. Why Is It Called the Dog Star?
Sirius belongs to the constellation Canis Major, which is Latin for the Greater Dog. In the old star pictures, Canis Major is one of the hunting dogs following at the heels of Orion, and Sirius marks the dog’s nose or heart depending on which chart you’re reading. Because it’s the standout star of that constellation, it earned the affectionate title of the Dog Star.
That link to dogs also gave us a phrase you probably use without thinking. In ancient Greece and Rome, Sirius rose in the sky alongside the Sun during the hottest stretch of summer. People blamed the star for the sweltering heat and called that period the “dog days” of summer. The name stuck, even though the star has nothing to do with our weather.
The Secret Companion: Sirius A and Sirius B
Here’s where Sirius gets really interesting. What looks like a single star to our eyes is actually two stars locked in orbit around each other.
The one we see is Sirius A, a hot, young, blue-white star with around twice the mass of our Sun. Its partner is Sirius B, a strange little object nicknamed “the Pup.” Sirius B is a white dwarf, the collapsed, burned-out core left behind after a star like our Sun runs out of fuel. It packs almost the entire mass of the Sun into a ball roughly the size of Earth. A spoonful of that material would weigh an astonishing amount, because white dwarf matter is crushed to incredible densities. The two stars circle each other roughly once every 50 years. Sirius B is fascinating for a reason that seems backwards at first: it was once the bigger, heavier star of the pair. Being more massive, it burned through its fuel faster, swelled into a red giant, and then shed its outer layers to become the dense white dwarf we see today. Its former companion, Sirius A, is still happily shining as a normal star. In effect, the Pup is the older sibling that has already finished its life.
Finding Sirius B was a triumph of detective work. Back in 1844, the astronomer Friedrich Bessel noticed that Sirius A wasn’t moving in a straight line across the sky. It wobbled, as if something unseen was tugging on it. He correctly guessed there had to be an invisible companion. It wasn’t until 1862 that telescope maker Alvan Graham Clark actually spotted the faint little star hiding in the glare. Sirius B became the first white dwarf ever discovered, decades before anyone understood what white dwarfs even were.
Why Does Sirius Twinkle and Flash Colors?
If you’ve watched Sirius closely, you may have seen it sparkle wildly, sometimes throwing off flashes of red, blue, and white. People occasionally mistake it for a UFO or a flashing aircraft because of this.
The truth is more down to earth, literally. Sirius doesn’t actually change color. What you’re seeing is our own atmosphere at work. Because Sirius is so bright and often sits low in the sky, its light passes through a thick slice of turbulent air on the way to your eye. That moving air bends and splits the starlight, scattering it into shifting colors. Astronomers call this scintillation, and it’s the same reason all stars twinkle. Sirius just does it more dramatically because it’s so brilliant.
How to Find Sirius in the Sky
The good news is that Sirius is one of the easiest stars to locate, and it comes with a built-in signpost.
First, find Orion, the famous hunter, which dominates winter evenings in the Northern Hemisphere. Look for the three bright stars in a short, straight row that form Orion’s Belt. Now follow the line of that belt downward and to the left. Keep going and you’ll run right into a dazzling star. That’s Sirius. This trick works because the belt points almost directly at it. Sirius is highest and best placed on winter evenings from roughly December through March. From the Southern Hemisphere, Sirius climbs even higher overhead and is just as easy to spot, riding high through the summer months there.
A Star Woven Into Human History
Few stars have meant as much to people as Sirius. In ancient Egypt, its first reappearance in the dawn sky each year came right before the annual flooding of the Nile, the event that made their farmland fertile. They tracked it so carefully that Sirius, which they called Sopdet, effectively marked the start of their new year. For a civilization that depended entirely on the Nile, a single star became a cosmic calendar.
That’s the quiet magic of Sirius. It’s brilliant enough for a child to point at, close enough to be a neighbor, strange enough to hide a crushed stellar corpse in plain sight, and old enough to have guided entire civilizations. Not bad for a dot of light you can see from your own backyard.
