The Little Dipper: How to Find Ursa Minor and the North Star That Sits at Its Tip

Almost everyone has heard of the Little Dipper, and almost everyone assumes it’s easy to find. Then they go outside, look up, and realize they have no idea which faint little cluster of stars it actually is. A Faint Little Ladle With a Very Famous Star

The Little Dipper is an asterism, which is just a recognizable pattern of stars rather than an official constellation in its own right. It’s made up of seven stars that trace the shape of a small ladle or scoop, and together they form the constellation Ursa Minor, the Little Bear. The dipper’s curved handle is the bear’s long tail, and the bowl is its body.

It’s the smaller, dimmer cousin of the far more obvious Big Dipper. In fact the two are arranged almost as mirror images, so that when one looks upright, the other appears tipped over. How to Find the Little Dipper (the Big Dipper Points the Way)

Here’s the trick that makes everything click. Don’t try to find the Little Dipper on its own. Start with its bright, unmistakable neighbor, the Big Dipper, and let it lead you there.

Look at the bowl of the Big Dipper, the deep scoop at the end of its handle. The two stars that form the outer edge of that bowl, named Dubhe and Merak, are known as the “pointer stars.” Draw an imaginary line up through those two stars and extend it about five times the gap between them. That line runs almost straight into Polaris. And since Polaris marks the tip of the Little Dipper’s handle, you’ve now found your anchor. From there you can trace the rest of the faint ladle curving away from it.

Do keep your expectations realistic. Here’s a final twist that most people never realize. Polaris hasn’t always held the title of North Star, and it won’t hold it forever.

Earth doesn’t spin perfectly steadily. Like a wobbling top, its axis traces a slow circle over roughly 26,000 years, a motion astronomers call precession. As the axis wanders, it points toward different stars over the ages. Thousands of years ago the pole pointed near the brilliant star Vega instead, and in about 12,000 years it will drift back toward Vega once again.
