The Leo Constellation: How to Spot the Lion and the Backward Question Mark in Its Mane

Most constellations need a generous imagination to see the thing they’re named after. Leo is one of the rare exceptions that actually looks like its namesake. With a little practice you really can see a crouching lion up there, head raised, staring proudly across the spring sky like a celestial Sphinx. And the best part is that finding it starts with spotting one of the most distinctive shapes in the whole sky, a backward question mark.

So let’s track down Leo the Lion, learn its bright stars, and peek at the galaxies hiding beneath its belly.

Look for the Backward Question Mark

Here’s the trick that makes Leo easy. Forget trying to trace a whole lion at first, and just look for a curved line of stars shaped like a backward question mark. Astronomers call this pattern the Sickle, and it forms the lion’s head and flowing mane.

At the bottom of that question mark, right where the dot would go, sits a bright star called Regulus. Once you’ve found the Sickle and Regulus, the rest of Leo falls into place, a triangle of stars off to the east forms the lion’s hindquarters and tail. Put the backward question mark and the triangle together, and there’s your lion.

Regulus: The Heart of the Lion

Regulus is Leo’s brightest star and the 21st brightest in the entire night sky, a brilliant blue-white point marking the lion’s heart. Its name fittingly means “little king” in Latin.

Like so many stars, Regulus keeps a secret. What looks like a single point of light is actually a four-star system, two pairs of stars bound together, including a blue-white main star with a faint white dwarf companion tucked in close. Regulus also sits almost exactly on the ecliptic, the path the Sun, Moon, and planets trace across the sky, which means the Moon regularly passes in front of it, and occasionally even the planets Mercury and Venus do too.

Denebola and Algieba: The Tail and the Mane

At the far end of Leo, marking the tip of the lion’s tail, is Denebola, the constellation’s second-brightest star. Its name literally comes from the Arabic for “tail of the lion,” and it sits a fairly close 36 light-years away.

Back up in the Sickle is Algieba, a lovely star whose name refers to the lion’s mane. Point a telescope at it and it splits into a beautiful double star, one glowing golden-orange and the other a softer yellow, orbiting each other around 130 light-years away. The Hidden Treasure: A Trio of Galaxies

Here’s where Leo really rewards anyone with a telescope. Tucked between Regulus and Denebola, beneath the lion’s body, sits one of the most famous sights in the spring sky, the Leo Triplet.

This is a group of three spiral galaxies, Messier 65, Messier 66, and NGC 3628, sitting close together in the same patch of sky roughly 30 million light-years away. Through a backyard telescope they appear as three faint, elongated smudges, but each one is a vast island of billions of stars far beyond our own Milky Way. The Lion of Myth

Leo is one of the oldest recognized constellations, catalogued by the Greek astronomer Ptolemy nearly two thousand years ago, and it’s usually tied to the Nemean lion of Greek mythology, the fearsome beast with an impenetrable hide that Hercules had to defeat as the first of his famous twelve labors. Unable to pierce its skin with weapons, Hercules is said to have wrestled it with his bare hands. The lion was placed among the stars afterward, a permanent trophy in the sky.

When to Look for Leo

Leo is a constellation of spring evenings for Northern Hemisphere skywatchers, climbing high into the southern sky and best viewed around April, when it sits comfortably overhead in the mid-evening hours. It’s visible from nearly everywhere on Earth except the far south, which is part of why so many cultures wove stories around it.
