Some constellations are enormous and still somehow forgettable. Lyra is the opposite. It’s one of the smallest patterns in the whole sky, yet on a summer night it grabs your eye faster than almost anything else up there, all thanks to one dazzling blue-white star. People have been calling this little shape a harp for over three thousand years, and once you learn to spot it, you’ll find yourself looking for it every summer without even meaning to.
So let’s meet Lyra, the celestial harp, and figure out how to pick it out of the night sky yourself.
A Harp Strung Across the Sky
The name Lyra comes from the Latin word for lyre, an ancient stringed instrument a lot like a small harp. Its main shape is a neat little parallelogram of stars, four corners forming the body of the instrument, with one brilliant star hanging just off to the side like the top of the frame.
Despite being the 52nd largest of the 88 official constellations, which is to say fairly tiny, Lyra is one of the most distinctive patterns you can learn. The Greeks tied it to Hermes and the musician Orpheus, whose playing was said to be so beautiful it could charm anything alive. The story goes all the way back to descriptions written around 270 BC, which is a genuinely staggering length of time for a star pattern to keep the same name.
Vega: The Star That Does All the Heavy Lifting
Here’s the secret to finding Lyra. You don’t hunt for the whole harp, you just look for one incredibly bright star, and the rest falls into place.
That star is Vega, and it’s a showstopper. It’s the fifth brightest star in the entire night sky and the second brightest in the northern half, a brilliant blue-white point that’s hard to mistake for anything else. On summer evenings from the Northern Hemisphere, it passes almost directly overhead, so bright that people sometimes call it the Harp Star. Once your eyes adjust to the dark, you can trace the faint parallelogram dangling just below it, and there’s your harp.
Vega has another trick up its sleeve. It forms one corner of a huge, easy-to-spot triangle called the Summer Triangle, along with Deneb in the constellation Cygnus and Altair in Aquila. Find that big triangle riding high on a summer night and you’ve automatically found Vega, and Lyra with it. The Ghostly Ring Hiding Inside the Harp
Lyra’s real treasure isn’t a star at all. Tucked between the two southern stars of the parallelogram sits M57, better known as the Ring Nebula, and it’s one of the most beloved targets in all of amateur astronomy.
Through a small telescope it looks like a tiny, ghostly smoke ring floating in the dark, a perfect little circle of glowing gas. What you’re actually seeing is the aftermath of a dying star. When a star like our Sun runs out of fuel, it puffs off its outer layers into space and leaves behind a hot, shrinking core. That shed gas glows as a planetary nebula, and the leftover core becomes a white dwarf, the compact corpse of a dying star. When and Where to Look
Lyra is a summer constellation for Northern Hemisphere observers, though you can actually catch it across a generous stretch of the year, roughly April through December. Its best showing is on warm summer nights when Vega climbs high toward the zenith.
The good news for beginners is that Vega is so bright it cuts through light pollution far better than fainter stars. Even from a city, you can usually spot that blue-white beacon, then use it as your anchor to find everything else.
The Constellation Behind a Meteor Shower
One more reason Lyra deserves a spot in your memory, it lends its name to the Lyrid meteor shower, one of the oldest recorded showers, which peaks each year in mid-April. The meteors appear to streak outward from a point near Vega, which is exactly why they carry the name Lyrids.
