At a steady motorway speed it would take you around six months of non-stop driving to cover the distance. Light, which crosses the gap far more casually, still needs about 1.3 seconds to make the trip, which is why there’s a faint delay on radio calls between Earth and the Moon.

Another way people like to picture it is this. The gap between Earth and the Moon is so wide that you could line up all seven of the other planets in the solar system, side by side, in the space between us, and they would just about fit. Why the Distance Keeps Changing

Here’s the reason there’s no single fixed number. The Moon doesn’t travel around Earth in a perfect circle. Its orbit is an ellipse, a gently stretched oval, so there’s a near point and a far point on every lap.

At its closest approach, called perigee, the Moon comes in to about 363,300 kilometres. At its most distant, known as apogee, it swings out to roughly 405,500 kilometres. The Moon Is Slowly Drifting Away

There’s one more twist, and it’s a slow one. The Moon isn’t just shifting nearer and farther each month, it’s very gradually moving away from us for good. Every year the Moon retreats by about 3.8 centimetres, roughly the rate your fingernails grow.
