A Musician’s Hobby Doubled the Size of the Known Solar System Overnight

For nearly six thousand years of recorded human history, the solar system ended at Saturn. Every civilization that had ever looked up, every astronomer who had ever charted the sky, worked within that boundary. Then on the night of March 13, 1781, a former composer squinted through a homemade telescope in his backyard in Bath, England, and the boundary simply wasn’t there anymore.

A Composer Who Took Up Astronomy at 34

William Herschel spent most of his early life as a working musician, not a scientist. Born in Hanover, he moved to England as a young man and built a genuinely successful career composing and performing before developing a serious interest in astronomy around age 34, well past the point most professional astronomers of the era had already made their names. What Herschel lacked in formal training, he made up for by building his own equipment, grinding and polishing telescope mirrors himself, eventually constructing instruments sharper than anything the Royal Observatory’s official Astronomer Royal had access to.

He wasn’t working alone, either. His younger sister Caroline Herschel spent countless nights beside him, polishing mirrors, recording observations, and later became a formidable astronomer in her own right, personally discovering eight comets and cataloging star clusters that earned her recognition from the Royal Astronomical Society.

“I Looked for the Comet and Found It Had Changed Its Place”

On the night in question, Herschel was working through a systematic survey of faint stars near the constellation Gemini when one object caught his attention, visibly larger and different in appearance from the pinpoint stars around it. His first instinct was reasonable, he assumed he’d found a comet, and wrote in his logbook that he’d spotted “either a Nebulous star or perhaps a Comet.” Four nights later, he checked again and found the object had shifted position relative to the background stars. “I looked for the comet or Nebulous star and found it was a comet, for it has changed its place,” he noted, still convinced of his original guess.

But something about it kept nagging at him. A genuine comet should trail a long, glowing tail of gas and dust. This object showed none, just a small, well-defined, disk-shaped glow, entirely unlike anything a comet should look like.

The Astronomer Royal Wasn’t Impressed

Herschel reported his find to the Royal Society and to Nevil Maskelyne, Britain’s Astronomer Royal, still describing it as a probable comet. Maskelyne’s reply, when it eventually came, was almost comically noncommittal: “I don’t know what to call it. It is as likely to be a regular planet moving in an orbit nearly circular to the Sun as a comet moving in a very eccentric ellipse.” Other astronomers in London and Paris struggled to even locate the object at first, their telescopes simply weren’t powerful enough to resolve what Herschel’s homemade instrument had already caught clearly.

It took months of careful tracking before Russian astronomer Anders Johan Lexell finally calculated the object’s orbit that summer and confirmed it: nearly circular, and sitting twice as far from the Sun as Saturn. It wasn’t a comet at all. It was a seventh planet, the first discovered since antiquity, and nobody in recorded history had ever needed a name for it before.

A Star Named After a King, Then Renamed for a God

Herschel, as the discoverer, got naming rights, and he chose to honor his adopted country’s monarch, calling it Georgium Sidus, “George’s Star.” Astronomers outside Britain weren’t thrilled with a planet named after a specific living king, and eventually the name Uranus won out instead, keeping the tradition of naming planets after figures from classical mythology. Herschel’s discovery earned him the Royal Society’s Copley Medal and, more practically, a paid position as court astronomer, letting him abandon music entirely for a life spent building ever-larger telescopes and discovering more than 2,500 nebulae before he was done.
