How Long Does Sunlight Take to Reach Uranus?
Since the sun is so far away light takes a prety long time to travel out to the ice giant. Here on Earth sunlight reaches us in roughly 8 minutes and 20 seconds.
Out at Uranus light has to travel for almost 2 hours and 40 minutes just to hit the upper atmosphere. Because the sunlight is spread out over such a huge distance the sun looks way smaller and dimmer from Uranus. It would look less like the giant bright ball we see every day and more like an intense bright star in a dark blue sky.
A Wild Orbit and Extreme Seasons
The sheer distance from the sun isn’t the only weird thing about Uranus’s pathway through space. Its axis of rotation is tilted at a crazy 98 degrees. This means the planet is basically rolling around the sun on its side!
This unique tilt combined with its huge distance creates some of the most dramatic seasons in the entire solar system:

- Followed immediately by 42 years of complete dark and freezing cold.
