Meteorite Definition: What a Meteorite Really Is, and How It Differs From a Meteor

Here’s the meteorite definition in one line: a meteorite is a piece of rock or metal from space that survives its blazing plunge through Earth’s atmosphere and actually reaches the ground. That’s the whole trick. If it’s still floating out in space, it isn’t a meteorite yet. And the flash of light you see when it burns up isn’t a meteorite either. Same object, different names, depending only on where it happens to be.

That little detail trips up almost everyone, and it’s worth clearing up once and for all, because the three words people mix up, meteoroid, meteor, and meteorite, actually describe three completely different moments in the same rock’s life.

One Rock, Three Names

The easiest way to keep the terms straight is to follow a single space rock on its journey toward Earth.

So the object starts as a meteoroid, becomes a meteor for a few brilliant seconds, and only earns the name meteorite if a piece of it makes it all the way down. Most never do. Why Most Meteors Never Become Meteorites

Look up on any clear, dark night for long enough and you’ll eventually catch a meteor. Here’s the humbling part: the rock making that dramatic streak is usually no bigger than a grain of sand.

It looks spectacular because of speed, not size. Meteoroids slam into the top of our atmosphere at anywhere from about 11 to 72 kilometers per second. At those speeds the air in front of the rock can’t get out of the way fast enough, so it compresses and heats violently, and that superheated air is what glows. The rock is essentially being sandblasted out of existence, shedding material as it goes. For something the size of a sand grain, the whole show is over in a second or two, and nothing reaches the ground.

Only the bigger, tougher arrivals stand a chance of surviving. And even then, less than five percent of the original object typically makes it down. Everything else is burned away on the way in.

Fireballs, Shooting Stars, and Other Nicknames

A few of these terms are just informal names for a meteor.

A “shooting star” or “falling star” is simply a meteor, nothing more. There’s no star involved at all, which is a lovely bit of poetic misdirection that’s stuck around for centuries. When a meteor burns brighter than the planet Venus, astronomers upgrade it to a “fireball.” And if that fireball goes out with a bang, exploding as it breaks apart, it’s often called a bolide. All of these are still just meteors, described by how dramatic they look.

Despite how tiny most of them are, the sheer numbers add up. NASA estimates that roughly 48 tons of meteoritic material rains down on Earth every single day, the vast bulk of it as fine dust you’d never notice settling on your windowsill.

Where Meteorites Actually Come From

Most meteorites are ancient shrapnel. When you hold one, you’re usually holding a fragment of a shattered asteroid, blasted off in some long-ago collision and left drifting until Earth’s gravity finally caught it. The great majority trace back to the asteroid belt between Mars and Jupiter.

A rare few come from somewhere far more exotic. A small fraction of the meteorites found on Earth were knocked off the surface of Mars or the Moon by impacts, then wandered across space before landing here. That means there are genuine pieces of Mars sitting in museum drawers, delivered free of charge by physics.

Meteorites themselves come in three broad flavors: stony ones, iron ones, and mixed stony-irons. Most that fall are stony, but the iron ones are far easier to spot later because they’re heavy and metallic and stand out from ordinary Earth rocks. That’s also why so many are found in deserts and across the ice of Antarctica, where a dark space rock has nowhere to hide.

When a Space Rock Comes in With Attitude

Here’s a reassuring point worth stressing. There’s a difference between the tiny meteoroids that make pretty streaks and the rare monsters that make headlines. One should be enjoyed, the other studied carefully, and the truly dangerous ones are extremely rare.

Now and then, though, a bigger one arrives. In 2013 a house-sized rock blazed over Chelyabinsk, Russia, and exploded about 23 kilometers up with the energy of hundreds of thousands of tons of TNT. The blast wave shattered windows across the city and injured more than 1,600 people, almost all from flying glass rather than the rock itself. Go further back to 1908 and the Tunguska event flattened hundreds of square kilometers of Siberian forest when an object, likely around 37 meters across, detonated in the air before ever touching down.

Direct hits on people are astonishingly rare. The most famous case happened in 1954, when an Alabama woman named Ann Hodges was napping on her couch and a grapefruit-sized meteorite crashed through her roof and struck her, leaving a nasty bruise. It remains the best-documented case of a person being hit by a rock from space.

Why Scientists Treasure Every Meteorite

For all the drama, the real value of meteorites is quiet and enormous. Many of them are leftover building material from the birth of the solar system, essentially unchanged for around 4.6 billion years. Cracking one open is like reading a page from the solar system’s earliest chapter, before Earth even existed.
