The Short Answer
Neptune has 16 known moons. That’s the current official count from NASA, though like most planets in the outer solar system, the number tends to creep upward over time as sharper telescopes pick out ever fainter, smaller moons. One of those 16 completely dominates all the rest, a giant, backwards-orbiting world called Triton that holds nearly all the mass in Neptune’s moon system.
Neptune sits so far out on the cold edge of the solar system that we didn’t get a proper look at its moons until a single spacecraft flew past in 1989. What it found was one of the strangest and most lopsided moon families out there, ruled by a captured outsider. So let’s count them up and get to know the ice giant’s peculiar entourage.
Sixteen Moons, but One Rules Them All
Neptune’s 16 moons aren’t a balanced set of similar worlds. The system is wildly top-heavy. Triton alone accounts for the overwhelming majority of all the mass orbiting Neptune, leaving everything else as small fry by comparison.
To put Neptune in context with its fellow giants, its 16 moons are modest next to the sprawling families of the other outer planets. Neptune’s smaller tally partly reflects how hard it is to spot tiny, dim moons at such an enormous distance, so its real number may yet climb.
Triton: The Giant That Doesn’t Belong
Triton is the star of the show, and it’s genuinely one of the oddest moons in the solar system. It’s big, roughly 2,700 kilometres across, which makes it larger than Pluto and only a bit smaller than our own Moon. It was spotted by the English astronomer William Lassell in 1846, just 17 days after Neptune itself was discovered.
What makes Triton so strange is the way it moves. Almost every large moon in the solar system orbits in the same direction its planet spins. Triton does the opposite. It circles Neptune backwards, in what’s called a retrograde orbit, and on a steeply tilted path. That’s a huge clue about its past. Moons that form alongside their planet don’t orbit backwards, so Triton almost certainly didn’t form with Neptune at all. A Frozen World That’s Still Active
For a place so far from the Sun, Triton is surprisingly lively. It has the coldest surface ever measured anywhere in the solar system, around minus 235 degrees Celsius, cold enough that its surface is largely made of frozen nitrogen. And yet, when Voyager 2 flew by, it caught geyser-like plumes erupting from the surface, blasting nitrogen gas and dark dust several kilometres into the thin atmosphere.
Its surface is a bizarre patchwork too, including a wrinkled region nicknamed “cantaloupe terrain” for its resemblance to melon skin, and a pinkish polar cap of methane ice. Triton’s capture likely wrecked whatever original moon system Neptune had, scattering and re-forming the inner moons from the debris. And because it orbits backwards, Triton is slowly spiralling inward. Billions of years from now, Neptune’s gravity is expected to tear it apart into a spectacular ring.
The Rest of the Family
Beyond Triton, Neptune’s other 15 moons split into a few groups. Closest in are a set of small, dark inner moons with names like Naiad, Thalassa, Despina, Galatea, Larissa, and Proteus. These orbit in the ordinary, forward direction near Neptune’s equator, and several act as shepherds for the planet’s faint rings. Proteus is the second largest of all Neptune’s moons, yet it’s still dwarfed by Triton and is so dark it wasn’t found until Voyager 2 arrived.
Farther out are the irregular moons, small bodies on distant, tilted, often looping orbits, likely captured objects themselves. The best known is Nereid, discovered in 1949, which has the most eccentric orbit of any moon in the solar system, swinging dramatically nearer and farther from Neptune. So the headline answer is 16 moons, but the real story is one giant, backwards-orbiting captive surrounded by a scattering of small, dark companions. It’s one of the most unusual moon systems we know of, and a reminder of how much drama plays out even in the cold, distant corners of our solar system.
