The Short Answer
About 1.3 million Earths could fit inside the Sun. That’s the kind of number that sounds made up until you sit with it for a second. Our entire planet, all seven continents, every ocean, every mountain, times more than a million, and it would still slot neatly inside our home star.
I think most of us know the Sun is big. We say it casually, “the Sun is huge,” and move on. But huge doesn’t really land until you try to picture cramming over a million Earths into it. Suddenly the scale of the thing gets a little dizzying, and that’s exactly the fun of it. So let’s actually unpack how many Earths fit in the Sun, and what that tells us about the star we orbit.
The Big Number and Where It Comes From
Here’s how the math shakes out. The Sun has a volume roughly 1.3 million times that of Earth. So if you could somehow hollow out the Sun and pour Earths into it like marbles into a jar, about 1.3 million of them would fit.
There’s a small catch worth mentioning, because it comes up a lot. That 1.3 million figure treats the Sun as empty space you fill perfectly. In reality, when you pack round objects together, gaps always form between them, the same way a jar of marbles is never completely solid. Factor in those gaps and the more realistic number is closer to 960,000 Earths. Both answers are correct, they’re just answering slightly different versions of the question. When people ask how many Earths fit in the Sun, the 1.3 million volume figure is the one usually quoted.
Lining Earths Up Across the Sun
Volume is one way to picture it, but there’s another that might click better. Instead of filling the Sun, imagine lining Earths up in a single row stretching across it, like beads on a string.
The Sun’s diameter is about 1,392,000 kilometers, roughly 865,000 miles. Earth’s diameter is a modest 12,742 kilometers. Divide one by the other and you get about 109. So you could line up 109 Earths across the face of the Sun before running out of room. That single row is a much smaller number than 1.3 million, and it’s a good reminder of how fast volume explodes when you go from a line to a full three-dimensional sphere.
It’s Not Just Big, It’s Heavy
Fitting Earths inside the Sun is a volume question, but there’s a second way the Sun dwarfs us, and that’s mass. The Sun weighs about 333,000 times as much as Earth. Even though it’s made of gas rather than rock, there’s so unbelievably much of it that the numbers get staggering.
Put it another way. The Sun makes up about 99.86% of all the mass in the solar system. Every planet, every moon, every asteroid and comet and speck of dust, all of it combined, accounts for less than a sixth of one percent. And Yet, the Sun Is Only Average
Now for the part that really scrambles your sense of scale. By the standards of stars, the Sun isn’t even big. It’s a fairly ordinary yellow dwarf, middle of the pack in just about every way.
Some stars out there make the Sun look like a pebble. Betelgeuse, the red giant in Orion’s shoulder, is so enormous that if you dropped it where the Sun sits, it would swallow Mercury, Venus, Earth, and Mars, and reach out past the asteroid belt. The Sun could hold 1.3 million Earths, sure, but a star like that could hold hundreds of millions of Suns. Our star is genuinely huge compared to us and genuinely modest compared to the giants. Both things are true at once, and that’s part of what makes astronomy so addictive.
