Science fiction loves wormholes, tunnels through space and time that let a ship skip the boring part of a journey and pop out somewhere entirely different. The physics behind the idea is genuinely real, rooted directly in Einstein’s own equations. Whether nature has ever actually built one is a completely different question.
Born From Einstein’s Own Math
The concept traces back to 1935, when Albert Einstein and physicist Nathan Rosen were working through solutions to the equations of general relativity and found something unexpected, a mathematical bridge connecting two separate points in spacetime. Physicists now call this an Einstein-Rosen bridge, and it emerges from the exact same equations that describe black holes. In fact, the math suggests a wormhole could theoretically connect two black hole-like openings, one acting as an entrance and the other as an exit, folding spacetime the way you might fold a sheet of paper to bring two distant points together instantly.
Physicist John Wheeler coined the catchier term “wormhole” decades later, in 1957, comparing the shortcut to a worm tunneling through an apple rather than crawling across its entire surface.
The Catch: It Would Collapse Instantly
Here’s where the science fiction version runs into trouble. A wormhole built from an ordinary Einstein-Rosen bridge is fundamentally unstable, the tunnel would pinch itself shut and collapse faster than light itself could cross it. Anything attempting to travel through would get crushed long before reaching the other side. For a wormhole to stay open long enough for actual travel, it would need to be propped open by something called exotic matter, a theoretical substance with negative energy density that has never actually been observed or confirmed to exist.
Even setting exotic matter aside, no evidence for a real wormhole has ever turned up. Decades of astronomical surveys searching for their telltale gravitational signatures have come back empty.
Recent Research Is Complicating the Picture Further
The story keeps evolving too. Earlier this year, researchers revisited Einstein and Rosen’s original 1935 paper and argued the bridge was never really meant as a travel shortcut at all, it was originally an attempt to reconcile gravity with quantum physics, and may actually describe something closer to two mirrored directions of time meeting at a single point, rather than a tunnel a spacecraft could fly through. Fascinating Math, Still Waiting on Physics
Wormholes remain a genuinely legitimate area of theoretical physics research, dozens of papers on the topic get published every year, but that’s very different from being an engineering possibility. For now, they exist exactly where Einstein and Rosen first found them, in the equations, real enough to study, but with nothing in the observable universe yet to back them up.
