This Asteroid Has Been Watched for 169 Years, and It Just Turned Out to Be Three Rocks Wearing a Trench Coat

Asteroid 44 Nysa has been sitting in astronomers’ sights since 1857, bright, big, and stubbornly hard to pin down. Every few decades, someone got a slightly better look and walked away more confused than before, first it looked stretched out, then maybe two lumps stuck together. This year, the sharpest images ever taken of it finally settled the question, and the answer turned out to be weirder than anyone guessed. Nysa isn’t one asteroid. It’s arguably three, wearing a trench coat.

A 169-Year Game of Twenty Questions

Nysa belongs to a rare, unusually bright category of asteroids called E-types, coated in a mineral called enstatite that makes it reflect far more sunlight than its darker, more common neighbors in the main belt between Mars and Jupiter. That brightness has made it an irresistible target for well over a century, yet its actual shape kept slipping away from every generation of telescope that tried to pin it down. Radar data in 2006 hinted at something concave. Brightness measurements over the decades suggested it might be elongated, or possibly two objects stuck together.

None of it was sharp enough to say for sure, until a team led by Kate Minker of Lowell Observatory pointed two of the most advanced instruments on Earth at it in early 2026, the Large Binocular Telescope’s SHARK-VIS camera in Arizona and the SPHERE/ZIMPOL instrument on Chile’s Very Large Telescope.

Sharper Than Hubble, Somehow

The Large Binocular Telescope’s mirror spans 27 feet, three times wider than Hubble’s, and its adaptive optics system uses 672 rapid, computer-controlled actuators constantly reshaping a secondary mirror to cancel out atmospheric blur in real time. Combined with specialized image processing, the resulting pictures of Nysa actually came out sharper than anything Hubble has ever captured of it. What they revealed were two deep valleys wrapping around the asteroid’s circumference, features the team interprets as narrow “necks” joining three separate lobes into a single 46-mile-wide body.

“The images reveal a remarkably unusual object,” Minker said. “The most likely explanation is that Nysa is either a contact trinary, consisting of three connected components, or an extremely irregular coherent body unlike anything we’ve previously observed.” If confirmed, it would be the first object of its kind ever documented.

A Moon Nobody Knew Was There

The same observations turned up a genuine bonus, a tiny previously unknown moon, temporarily designated S/2026 (44) 1, just over half a mile across and orbiting at least 100 miles from Nysa itself. Researchers had to borrow a technique from an entirely different field, high-contrast imaging normally used to hunt for faint exoplanets buried in a star’s glare, just to pull the moon’s faint light out from Nysa’s overwhelming brightness. Weighing a Wrapped Present

Co-author Al Conrad, from the Large Binocular Telescope Observatory, compared the ongoing work to a very specific childhood ritual. Figuring out Nysa’s structure, he explained, is a bit like shaking a wrapped Christmas present to guess what’s inside, you can’t see it directly, so you feel out its weight and behavior instead. Tracking how the newly found moon orbits over time should let researchers finally calculate Nysa’s mass and density precisely, the missing piece needed to settle whether it’s three fused chunks or one bizarrely shaped whole.

Whatever the final answer turns out to be, researchers suspect Nysa’s shape traces back to an ancient, low-speed collision, fragments slowly gluing themselves back together under weak gravity, or possibly the leftovers of a violent hit-and-run between much larger bodies billions of years ago. Either way, a name chosen in 1857 for a mythical valley that hid a god from view turned out to be more fitting than anyone realized, Nysa kept its true shape hidden for nearly two centuries.
