Almost everyone has looked up at some point and wondered why the Moon keeps changing shape. One night it’s a fat glowing circle. A week later it’s a thin silver curve that looks like it was drawn with a single brushstroke. Then it disappears completely, and you find yourself squinting at an empty patch of sky wondering if you imagined the whole thing.
Here’s the good news. The Moon isn’t actually changing shape at all, and it’s not being nibbled away by Earth’s shadow the way a lot of us were told as kids. What you’re watching is something far simpler and honestly more elegant, a slow game of light and angles playing out over roughly a month. Once you understand it, you’ll never look at the Moon the same way again. So let’s break down all eight phases, what each one means, and how to tell at a glance whether the Moon is growing or shrinking.
First, the Big Misunderstanding: It’s Not Earth’s Shadow
Let’s clear this up right away, because it trips up almost everyone. The phases of the Moon have nothing to do with Earth casting a shadow on it. That’s a completely different event called a lunar eclipse, and it’s rare.
The real explanation is this. The Moon makes no light of its own. The only thing in our whole solar system that shines with its own light is the Sun, and everything else, Earth and Moon included, just reflects it. At every single moment, the Sun lights up exactly one half of the Moon, the same way it lights up one half of Earth to give us day and night. That never changes. What does change is how much of that lit-up half we happen to be able to see from down here, and that depends entirely on where the Moon is along its orbit around us.
So the Moon isn’t really getting bigger or smaller. We’re just catching it from different angles as it circles Earth, seeing more or less of its sunny side. That’s the whole trick.
The Full Trip Takes About a Month
The Moon travels all the way around Earth in about 27.3 days. But the cycle of phases, going from one new moon to the next new moon, takes a little longer, roughly 29.5 days. The difference is because Earth itself is moving around the Sun the whole time, so the Moon has to travel a bit farther to line everything back up.
That 29.5-day rhythm is basically where the word “month” comes from in the first place. And across that stretch, the Moon moves through eight recognizable phases, always in the same order. Let’s walk through them.
The 8 Phases of the Moon, in Order
1. New Moon
This is the invisible one. The Moon sits roughly between Earth and the Sun, which means the lit half is pointed away from us and the dark half is facing our way. On top of that, the Moon is up in the daytime sky right alongside the Sun, so there’s simply nothing to see. The new moon marks the quiet starting point of a fresh cycle.
2. Waxing Crescent
Now a sliver of light appears. As the Moon inches along its orbit, a thin curved edge of its sunny side peeks into view, and it gets a touch bigger each night. “Waxing” just means growing. This is that delicate fingernail Moon you sometimes spot low in the west just after sunset.
3. First Quarter
Here you see exactly half of the Moon’s lit face, so it looks like a neat half-circle. People often call this a “half moon,” and that’s fair enough, but the name first quarter actually refers to the Moon being one quarter of the way through its monthly journey. It’s beautifully placed for evening viewing, riding high in the sky after sunset.
4. Waxing Gibbous
“Gibbous” is a lovely old word that basically means bulging or humped. At this stage more than half the Moon is lit, and it keeps swelling toward fullness, brightening the sky a little more each night.
5. Full Moon
The showstopper. Now the Moon sits on the opposite side of Earth from the Sun, so the entire face pointed at us is bathed in sunlight. It rises right around sunset and sets around sunrise, which is why a full moon feels like it owns the whole night. It stays looking full for a day or two before it starts to fade.
6. Waning Gibbous
After the full moon, the show reverses. “Waning” means shrinking, and now the lit portion begins to slip out of view. It’s still big and bright, more than half-lit, but the illuminated part is retreating night after night.
7. Third Quarter
Also called the last quarter, this is the mirror image of the first quarter. You once again see half the Moon lit, but it’s the opposite half this time. A third quarter Moon tends to rise in the middle of the night and hangs around into the morning, which is why it often greets early risers rather than evening skywatchers.
8. Waning Crescent
The final act. The Moon has thinned back down to a slim curve, growing narrower each day as it slides toward the Sun’s direction again. Soon it will vanish into the glare and the whole cycle quietly resets at the next new moon.
The Easiest Trick for Telling Waxing From Waning
Here’s a genuinely useful shortcut for anyone in the Northern Hemisphere. When the Moon is lit on its right side, it’s waxing, growing toward full. When it’s lit on its left side, it’s waning, shrinking toward new. One handy way to remember it: the light “fills in” from the right and “empties out” from the left, like reading a page.
Worth flagging if you live south of the equator, everything is flipped. Skywatchers in the Southern Hemisphere see the whole thing mirrored, so the lit side is on the left when the Moon is waxing. Same Moon, same phases, just a different vantage point on our shared planet.
Wait, So Why Don’t We Get an Eclipse Every Month?
Good question, and it gets right at something subtle. You might think that every new moon, when the Moon passes between us and the Sun, we’d get a solar eclipse. And every full moon, when Earth sits between the Sun and Moon, we’d get a lunar eclipse.
The reason we don’t is that the Moon’s orbit is tilted by about five degrees relative to Earth’s path around the Sun. So most months the Moon passes a little above or a little below the perfect straight line, and the shadows miss. Only when the alignment is nearly exact do we get the drama of an eclipse. A Bonus Sight: Earthshine
Here’s a little gift for patient skywatchers. When the Moon is a thin crescent, look closely and you can often make out the rest of its face glowing very faintly, a ghostly gray disk cradling that bright curve. That soft glow is called earthshine, and it’s sunlight bouncing off Earth and onto the Moon’s dark side. Leonardo da Vinci figured out what caused it centuries ago.
