If the eclipse is the daytime event, the six-planet alignment is the early morning opening act.

Then the Perseid Meteor Shower Takes Over

After the eclipse and the early morning planets, there is still another reason to stay interested in the sky.

The Perseid meteor shower will reach its peak around August 12-13.

The Perseids are one of the most famous meteor showers of the year and are caused by Earth passing through debris left behind by Comet 109P/Swift-Tuttle. As tiny pieces of dust and rock enter Earth’s atmosphere at extremely high speeds, they heat up and create the bright streaks we call meteors.

The Perseids are especially popular because they can produce bright, fast meteors and sometimes leave glowing trails behind them.

Normally, moonlight can be a real problem for meteor watching. A bright Moon can wash out the fainter meteors and make a good shower look much less impressive.

The good news is that you don’t need a telescope for the Perseids.

Find the darkest place you can, get away from streetlights if possible, give your eyes some time to adjust to the darkness and look toward a wide section of sky. You don’t even need to stare directly at Perseus, the constellation where the meteors appear to originate. The meteors can streak across a huge part of the sky.

Why August 12, 2026 Is So Unusual

You don’t need expensive equipment to enjoy most of what’s happening.

For the solar eclipse, the equipment that matters most is proper eye protection. Never look directly at the Sun during the partial phase without certified solar viewing protection.

For the planetary alignment, binoculars can help with the harder targets, especially Uranus and Neptune. A telescope makes the challenge even easier, but it’s not necessary if you’re just interested in seeing the brighter planets.

For the Perseids, forget the telescope. Your best tool is your own eyes.

Try to get somewhere away from city lights. A backyard in a heavily lit neighborhood can work, but a rural area, dark park or open location will give you a much better chance of seeing fainter meteors.

Also, don’t give up after five minutes.

Your eyes need time to adjust to darkness, and meteors don’t arrive on a schedule. You might see nothing for a couple minutes and then suddenly watch several streak across the sky almost one after another.

A comfortable chair or blanket can make a big difference too because the best meteor watching can involve spending a long time looking up.

One Day, Three Different Views of Space
