The Big Misconception: What Causes Moon Phases?

Before understanding the phases, we must clear up a common myth: Earth’s shadow does not cause moon phases. (Earth’s shadow is only involved during a lunar eclipse).

Instead, moon phases happen because of two simple facts:

  1. The Moon makes no light of its own — it only reflects sunlight.
  2. Half of the Moon is ALWAYS illuminated by the Sun — just like Earth always has a daytime half and a night half.

As the Moon orbits Earth every 29.5 days (a synodic month), our view of its lit half changes depending on its position relative to Earth and the Sun.

  2. Waxing Crescent (1%–49% Illuminated | Days 1–6)As the Moon moves along its orbit, a sliver of sunlight appears on the right side (Northern Hemisphere). “Waxing” simply means growing. Look low in the western sky right after sunset.
  3. First Quarter (50% Illuminated | Day 7.4)Half of the visible disk is lit on the right. The Moon has completed one-quarter of its journey around Earth and reaches its highest point around sunset.
  4. Waxing Gibbous (51%–99% Illuminated | Days 8–14)“Gibbous” comes from a Latin word meaning humpbacked. The illuminated area continues to swell past the half mark.
  5. Full Moon (100% Illuminated | Day 14.8)Earth sits between the Sun and Moon. The entire Earth-facing side of the Moon is lit. It rises precisely at sunset and shines all night long.
  6. Waning Gibbous (99%–51% Illuminated | Days 15–21)After reaching peak fullness, the Moon enters its “waning” (shrinking) period. The shadow begins creeping in from the right edge, leaving the left side lit.
  7. Last Quarter (50% Illuminated | Day 22.1)Exactly the left half of the Moon is lit. It rises around midnight and stays visible high in the sky through early morning.
  8. Waning Crescent (49%–1% Illuminated | Days 22–29)A thinning crescent remains illuminated on the far left. You can spot it in the early eastern sky just before sunrise, right before the cycle restarts at the New Moon.

In the Northern Hemisphere, a waxing (growing) Moon is lit on the right, while a waning (shrinking) Moon is lit on the left. (Note: Southern Hemisphere observers see this mirrored!)

Why does a full moon happen every 29.5 days instead of 27.3?

It takes 27.3 days for the Moon to orbit Earth once (sidereal month). However, because Earth is also moving around the Sun, the Moon needs an extra 2.2 days to catch up and align with the Sun again to complete a full phase cycle (synodic month).
